If you or a family member needs medical care outside normal clinic hours in Perth, you have several options — and the right choice depends on how urgent the situation is. Your main after hours options in Perth include emergency departments, after hours urgent care clinics, after hours home doctor services where a doctor comes to your home, and telehealth consultations by phone or video. This guide explains each option and how to decide which one is right for you.

If you're unsure, always call 000

If you think someone’s life might be at risk, call 000 immediately or go to your nearest emergency department.

As advised by St John WA and the WA Department of Health, examples of situations where you should call 000 are chest pain or tightness, breathing difficulties, uncontrollable bleeding, severe burns, poisoning or suspected overdose, unconsciousness or seizures, numbness or paralysis, a life-threatening injury, on-going fever in infants, or if someone is unresponsive.

What emergency departments are for: Emergency departments are the right choice when someone’s life is at risk or they need urgent specialist care that can’t be provided by a GP.

What to be aware of: Emergency departments triage patients by urgency, not arrival time. If your condition isn’t immediately life-threatening, you may wait several hours. For non-emergencies, an after hours urgent care clinic, home doctor, or telehealth may be a more appropriate choice that could get you seen faster.

After hours urgent care clinics

Some GP clinics and medical centres in Perth offer after hours urgent care walk-in appointments. These are bricks-and-mortar clinics — you travel to the clinic, walk in, and see a GP in their rooms for one-off urgent issues.

What after hours urgent care clinics are best for: illnesses and injuries that need same-day attention but aren’t life-threatening — things like minor fractures, sprains, and strains, minor burns, asthma flareups and cuts that may need stitches — issues that cannot wait until your the next day when your regular GP is next open.

What to be aware of: These clinics are designed for urgent, one-off presentations — not ongoing management of chronic conditions, repeat prescriptions, or routine care. Availability varies significantly across Perth. Walk-in urgent care clinics can also have long wait times, and you won’t see your regular GP.

For people searching for an “after hours clinic near me,” an “urgent care clinic near me,” or a “24 hour medical centre” in Perth, it’s worth knowing that very few clinics operate around the clock. You can search for available services on the Healthdirect service finder.

Home doctor services — a doctor who comes to you

A home doctor service sends a doctor to your home for a consultation. Most home visit services operate solely after hours and provide urgent care only. If you’re looking for a GP to come to you in normal business hours, or require non-urgent GP care at home, Perth Home GP is a full mobile GP service that operates in hours and after hours.

Home GPs are particularly valuable when getting to a clinic is difficult or impractical: when you’re too unwell to drive or sit in a waiting room, when you’re caring for young children and can’t easily get to a clinic (especially in the evening when you have other children at home), when you have an an infective illness such as gastro and don’t want to spread it in a clinic waiting room, or when you’re elderly or have limited mobility.

When a home doctor visit makes sense: If you’re well enough to travel and your issue is a one-off urgent problem, an after hours urgent care clinic might be just as suitable. But if leaving the house is difficult — because of the nature of your illness, your family situation, or mobility issues — a home doctor is often the better choice.

What to be aware of: Some home doctor services are bulk billed but may have longer wait times with no reliable Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), and consultations might be shorter in length. Private billing services tend to offer less rushed consultations and keep you updated with ETAs.

What a home doctor brings to your home: Home doctors carry basic diagnostic equipment for a clinical assessment. Some after hours services may also carry starter medications — though this varies by provider.

Perth Home GP — daytime and after hours home visits

Perth Home GP is the only mobile GP service in Perth that provides daytime home visits as well as after hours. As a fully fledged GP practice — not a locum or after hours deputising service — all of our visits are conducted by fully qualified, FRACGP-accredited GPs. We also offer services that most home doctor providers don’t: we can arrange for pathology as well as some ultrasound and X-ray at home through partner providers, perform ECGs and fit Holter monitors for heart monitoring, and we carry starter medications so you don’t need to find a late-night pharmacy. Available 24/7, 365 days a year, across 320+ suburbs in Perth, Rockingham, and Mandurah.

After hours telehealth — see a GP by phone or video

Telehealth lets you consult a GP remotely, by phone or video call, without leaving home. This is well suited for conditions where the GP can assess and treat based on your description, history, and visual assessment over video.

What can be treated over telehealth: urinary tract infections, some respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, asthma management, rashes, COVID-19 assessment, diabetes management, sexual health concerns, weight management and allergy management..

What to be aware of: Some conditions need an in-person assessment — if the GP suspects something that requires a physical examination, they may recommend a home visit or clinic visit instead. Telehealth is best when the GP can make a clinical decision based on what you describe and what they can see on video.

How to decide which after hours option is right for you

Not sure where to start? Here's a simple way to think about it.

Could it be life-threatening?

Call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department. If you're not sure, call 000 anyway — it's always better to call and not need it.

Is it urgent but not life-threatening?

If you're well enough to travel, an after hours urgent care clinic can see you for one-off urgent issues. If leaving the house is difficult, a home doctor visit is usually the better option.

Do you need a script, certificate, or advice?

Telehealth is often the quickest option. A phone or video consultation can get you what you need in minutes.

Can it wait until morning but you need advice now?

Perth Home GP offers bulk billed late-night telehealth for eligible patients — including urgent consultations after 11pm. A quick telehealth call can help you assess whether you need care now or can safely wait.
