At a glance

What a home doctor visit is, and who it is for

What it is

A GP comes to you, rather than you travelling to a clinic. It is an ordinary GP consultation that happens in your home. We offer one off visits or regular GP care at home.

Who it is for

Anyone too unwell to travel, or who cannot easily leave home. Also for carers who cannot leave a housebound patient.

Who comes

Every GP who visits is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, and carries the equipment for a full consultation.

What it costs

After hours visits start at $100 out-of-pocket and weekday daytime visits start at $150. Home visits are not bulk billed, but our telehealth is for eligible patients.

When we visit

Day and night, seven days a week, including public holidays, across Perth, Rockingham and Mandurah. We are the only Perth service offering in-hours home visits as well as after hours.

How to book

Call 1300 815 321. Reception will tell you the next available visit times and get you booked in.

In a medical emergency, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Home visits are for urgent and everyday GP problems, not for emergencies.

Booking and arrival

How to book, and when we arrive

1

You call to book

Call 1300 815 321 to book a doctor at home.

2

Reception gives you a time range

This is a provisional estimate of when the GP expects to reach you, not a fixed appointment time.

3

The GP texts you an expected time

The GP texts an estimated arrival time, and texts again if anything delays them.

4

The GP visits

The GP arrives and does a full consultation in your home.

Why we give a time range and not a time

Providing care at home is more unpredictable than in a clinic. We contend with traffic, and we sometimes care for patients who are quite sick and whose appointment lengths are uncertain.

That is why reception gives you a time range, and why the GP texts you when they have a better idea of when to expect them. We manage this unpredictability by being proactive in keeping you up to speed about arrival times.

Our promise to you

If we cannot reach you inside the time range reception gives you, you can cancel without paying a cancellation fee. Reception explains this when you book, before you have committed to anything.

A great service for when you cannot get to a doctor surgery. Dr David Evans came to our home to see my husband Tony and was both professional and friendly. Will use this service again.

Excellent service. Truly lovely doctor and it was so wonderful for my 2 year old granddaughter not to have to get put in the car and wait in a busy surgery. Waiting at home and being examined at home made it a much better experience for her.

The booking procedure was streamlined, we were kept up to date with all aspects of the process, including arrival time. The doctor was professional and helpful, providing me with a follow up text of additional important information. A great support system to make me feel confident Perth Home GP could help me manage the needs of my elderly father.

It has been such a positive experience to have a GP in my home . I didn’t experience that pressure of time restraints of making room for the next patient in a waiting room. I had the Doctor’s full attention and I felt he understand exactly all my concerns.

Great service from a very kind doctor who helped my 83 year old husband with efficiency and compassion . We are housebound and are unable to get to our usual GP so this service was much appreciated.

We recently had the team from Perth Home come to our house, and they were absolutely amazing! So kind, caring and genuinely understanding of our son’s complex needs. They took the time to listen, adapt, and made everything feel calm and respectful. It’s rare to find people who truly “get it,” but they really did. Thank you for treating our family — and especially P — with such dignity and compassion. Highly recommend!

We've had 2 home visits now and both were extremely positive. The doctors were very professional, efficient, friendly and helpful. The service is great, they can really cater for people who have difficulty getting to a doctor's office. They were really helpful on the phone as well, organising things promptly.

I’ve been genuinely impressed by this service and honestly don’t know how I ever managed without it. Appointments are easy to book and available quickly, and the home visits are unhurried, thorough, and incredibly convenient. It’s also wonderfully simple to organise what you need, being able to call and have a script sent straight to your phone is such a relief. The doctor arrives with a nurse, and for the first time in years I felt someone actually took the time to listen to every concern I had. He didn’t rush, he took a full and detailed medical history, and I felt genuinely heard and supported. They're available after hours and they come home to you. The whole experience feels caring, accessible and refreshingly human. I feel its rare to find a service that makes healthcare so incredibly easy. Thanks to Dr Mike Patton and his employees.

Choosing

Home visit or telehealth?

We are the only GP practice in WA that provides both home visits and telehealth, daytime and after hours 7 days a week. This table provides guidance as to what might be suitable for you.

How a home visit compares with telehealth
  GP home visit Telehealth
Best for In-person examination when getting to a clinic is difficult. Problems that do not need an in-person examination.
Cost From $100 out-of-pocket after hours and from $150 weekday daytimes. Bulk billed for eligible patients. $70 for everyone else.
Wait Reception gives a time range, then the GP texts an estimate. Usually the same day.
What can be done Almost anything that can be done in a GP clinic, we can do in the home. Advice, scripts, certificates, referrals and conditions that do not need an in-person assessment.
Availability Day and night, seven days, including public holidays. Day and night, seven days, subject to eligibility.

Situations

Is your situation one we handle?

The situations below are illustrations, not real patients.

Sick child at night

“My four year old has had a fever since this afternoon and it is now nine at night. I do not want to sit in an emergency department with her if I do not have to.”

This is one of the most common after hours calls we take. A GP will come and examine her properly at home. They will provide treatment advice and scripts if required. Most of the time your child can avoid going to an emergency department. If the GP thinks this is needed, they will email you a referral letter to take with you.

Arranging care for a parent

“Dad is in his eighties, lives on his own, and has had a chest infection for a week. He will not get in the car. I am trying to sort this out from work.”

You can book on his behalf. Tell reception you are calling for someone else, and have his Medicare card details to hand if you can. We can keep you or your Dad updated about the GP’s arrival time. If he needs ongoing support at home, we can be his regular GP.

Hard to leave the house

“I use a wheelchair and getting to my GP means booking transport days ahead. I would rather have a GP come to me if that is possible.”

We can help by doing a home visit as a one-off when you get sick, or we can also be your regular GP for ongoing care.

Checking the cost first

“I searched for a bulk billed home doctor. Before I call anyone I want to know what this is actually going to cost me.”

Home visits are not bulk billed. After hours home visits start at $100 and weekday daytime visits start at $150. If you require a bulk billed consultation, our telehealth service is bulk billed for eligible patients.

Frequently asked

Common questions

What do you call a doctor who comes to your house?

Most people call them a home doctor or a home visit doctor. You will also see a home doctor service described as a house doctor, mobile doctor or locum doctor. The doctors that come to your house from Perth Home GP are all GP Fellows.

Do doctors come to your house in Australia any more?

Yes. Home visits are a normal part of general practice in Australia, and doctors who come to your home are more common than people expect. We are a mobile GP practice, and unlike other home GP services, we provide both daytime and after hours home visit care.

What can a GP treat during a home visit?

The same range of problems a GP sees in a clinic. The GP takes a history, examines you and decides what happens next: treatment, tests or a referral.

Can a home doctor give antibiotics?

Yes, if the GP assesses that antibiotics are the right treatment. Our GPs carry starter medications for most urgent conditions. Often, treatment can begin during the visit, to give you time to get to a pharmacy, which is especially helpful late at night. There are some medications our GPs cannot provide during consultations, such as liquid medications required by children.

How long does a home doctor take to arrive?

It depends on where you are and how many visits the GP has ahead of you. Reception gives you a provisional arrival window when you book. Once your GP is on the way, they send an SMS with a more specific estimated time, and another if anything changes. We do not guarantee an arrival time, and reception will tell you honestly if we are unlikely to reach you soon.

Are home doctor visits in Perth bulk billed?

No. There is an out-of-pocket cost for the visit. After hours visits start at $100 out-of-pocket and weekday daytime visits start at $150. We offer bulk billed telehealth for eligible patients.

Can you visit someone in an aged care home?

Yes. We can arrange a one-off home visit to a Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF). We are not able to provide ongoing care to patients in this setting. We can however provide ongoing care in patients’ own homes and disability care homes.

Is there a hospital at home service in Perth?

That is a hospital run programme, and a different thing from what we do. We are a GP practice that visits homes, so we handle what a GP handles.

Can the same GP keep seeing me after the first visit?

Yes, through Regular Care. Perth Home GP can be your regular GP practice at home. You get a Lead GP who is your main caregiver, supported by our other home visit and telehealth GPs when they are not available.
