Local coverage

Is there a home doctor that covers South Perth?

Yes, right across the area. Perth Home GP’s doctors come to homes in South Perth, Kensington, Como and Manning, from the Mends Street ferry down to the foreshore, and through Karawara, Salter Point and Waterford on the Curtin side.

South Perth looks across the water at the city (Mends Street, the Zoo, the ferry), but that view comes with a catch: the Narrows or the Causeway sits between every resident and the nearest emergency department. The foreshore towers are filling with downsizers; the established Como and Manning streets hold many older residents; and there’s a student belt at Karawara and Waterford on Curtin’s western edge. The clinics along Angelo Street and Canning Highway book out, and once they close, the water is in the way. A home visit closes that gap, no bridge to cross.

Unlike telehealth-only and urgent care services, Perth Home GP is a fully accredited general practice. The doctors who visit are all GP Fellows (FRACGP or FACRRM), providing full GP care at home, in hours as well as after hours, so we can be your regular care as readily as your after-hours call. Our telehealth doctors are Perth-based.

Is there an urgent care clinic in South Perth?

If you think you might be having an emergency, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, call 000 for an ambulance. Perth Home GP is not an emergency service.

There’s no hospital or urgent care clinic in South Perth itself, worth knowing before you need one. The nearest emergency departments are Royal Perth Hospital for adults and Perth Children’s Hospital in Nedlands for children, with Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch also close to the south.

For walk-in urgent care that isn’t an emergency, St John Urgent Care Beckenham (1472 Albany Highway, Beckenham, open until 9pm, (08) 9350 8000) and the Booragoon Medicare Urgent Care Clinic (1 Aldous Place, 7am to 9pm, 7 days, (08) 9239 0222) are both close by.

For an illness a GP would ordinarily handle, we can come to you instead. If you think you might be having an emergency, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, call 000 for an ambulance.

Patient scenarios
Kensington · After hours

“It’s early on a Saturday evening off Banksia Terrace and our little one is tugging at a sore ear and won’t settle. It’s a recurring ear infection we know well, and the clinic’s already shut for the weekend. Can a doctor come and check her?”

Yes. Book an after hours home visit and a GP will come to you in Kensington, examine the ear, start treatment straight from the bag, and set up a follow-up so it’s properly seen through rather than patched over. No packing an unhappy child into the car. Call 1300 815 321.

Como · Daytime

“My mum’s in the established Como streets and she’s overdue for a review of her blood pressure and diabetes medications. The clinic trip keeps getting away from her and we’re all at work through the day. Can a doctor do the review at her place?”

Yes. Book a daytime home visit and a GP will bring the review to her: scripts sorted, numbers checked, and a plan set. Because this is ongoing care, we can stay on as her regular GP. See our regular care. Call 1300 815 321.

Karawara · Telehealth

“I’m a Curtin student in the Waterford–Karawara belt and I get migraines. I’ve got one that isn’t shifting, it’s a public holiday, there’s no local clinic open and no easy way to get to one. Can I speak to someone?”

You can. For a familiar, typical migraine, a telehealth consult with a Perth-based doctor can review what you’ve tried, sort appropriate relief and a script, and flag the signs that would mean being seen in person. For eligible patients, telehealth is bulk billed. Call 1300 815 321.

Scripts & pharmacies

Can I get a prescription filled in South Perth after hours?

Often you won’t need a pharmacy at all: our doctors carry starter medications for most urgent illnesses and can begin treatment during the visit. When you do need a script, your GP sends it to your phone as an eScript.

The pharmacies across South Perth are daytime-and-evening, not late-night. The later local options are Pharmacy 777 South Perth (143 Canning Highway, until 8pm) and Priceline Pharmacy South Perth (Mends Street, until 8pm), with Mends Street Pharmacy, Angelo Street Pharmacy and Amcal+ Como (Coode Street) through the day. For a genuinely late script, the nearest 11pm option is Botts Compounding Pharmacy (1098 Albany Highway, St James) across the highway. Hours can change, so a quick online search will show current opening hours. And for an urgent problem, our GPs can often give a starter dose of medication during a home visit to tide you over until you can get to a pharmacy.
