Does Subiaco have an emergency department?
This one needs a careful answer, because Subiaco has two hospitals and neither is a general emergency department. King Edward Memorial Hospital (374 Bagot Road, open 24 hours, (08) 6458 2222) is WA’s specialist women’s and newborns hospital; its emergency centre is for pregnancy and gynaecological emergencies, not general illness. St John of God Subiaco Hospital (12 Salvado Road) is open and busy, but it’s a private hospital with no emergency department. For a general emergency, the nearest departments are Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / QEII in Nedlands for adults (G Block, Hospital Avenue, open 24 hours, (08) 6457 3333) and Perth Children’s Hospital for children (15 Hospital Avenue, open 24 hours, (08) 6456 2222), both only minutes away.
For walk-in care, an after-hours GP clinic operates from St John of God Subiaco with limited session hours (weekend sessions start in the afternoon) and is worth calling first, while St John Urgent Care Osborne Park (435 Scarborough Beach Road, open until 9pm) is the nearest true urgent care.
For families home from King Edward with a new baby, one option is worth spelling out: our telehealth is bulk billed for children under 1, so if you’re unsure about a small, non-urgent concern in the early weeks, you can speak to a Perth-based GP without bundling a days-old newborn into a waiting room, and a doctor can visit at home if that’s the better course. That said, a young baby who is feeding poorly, is unusually floppy or unsettled, is having any trouble breathing, or has a fever needs to be seen urgently: call 000 or go to Perth Children’s Hospital. Telehealth is for reassurance and triage, not for an unwell newborn, and we’ll always point you to the hospital when that’s the right call.
For everyone else: an emergency department triages by severity, so a GP-level problem waits behind the genuinely urgent, and even the nearby options mean a drive and a queue.
